Very little is known about newcomer David Black, who has recorded the CD
Loving Ain't Easy on MC Hammer's Bust It record label. One can only conclude
from the CD cover that Black is his real name and that he's inspired by
Teddy Pendergrass and Johnny Gill. One of the tracks, Wait a Minute,
is clearly in the Pendergrass mould but vocally David is nearer to Eric Gable
than Teddy.
The album is truly unique: nine tracks - and every track is a ballad! The tunes are
not instantly capturing and I can't imagine this reaching any commercial success,
but I definitely like the overall feel: very intimate and deep, real soul.
Technically speaking, David is by no means a faultless singer, but the way he
stretches his gritty baritone voice is utterly soulful.
The only track below average is the Felton Pilate tune Lost in Your Love,
which is too sugary to my taste. Otherwise, there are no fillers,
the real winners featuring Found True Love and Lover. If you liked
the previous Eric Gable set, you're going to love this!
