THE O'JAYS

Love You to Tears
(US Volcano CD, 1997)
1) Pay the Bills 2) Turned Out 3) I Want My Cake 4) What's Stopping You 5) Serious Affair 6) You Can Make Me Fall in Love Again 7) Baby You Know 8) Another Lonely Night (Did You Forget about Me) 9) Getting Along Much Better 10) Love You to Tears

Our second Philly veterans this month, and the legendary O'Jays complete with new member Eric Nolan Grant, return after four years on a new label with a solid set of contemporary songs crafted by the production talents of Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat. From track one, the emphasis is on quality and continuity. The O'Jays sounding as good as ever on the quirky off-beat Pay the Bills, the wholly contemporary R. Kelly-ish Turned Out mid-tempo tapper and the fantastic Gerald Levert number I Want My Cake, which I feel has more than a passing nod to Barry White's Practice What You Preach. Nice lyrics, too!

What's Stopping You is classic O'Jays, and is followed by my personal favourite, Serious Affair, which is a knee-trembler and a half! MONSTER. Keith Sweat's production oozes from the superb Baby You Know, and simply adds to an album which was a long time coming, but boy was it worth the wait! A perfect fusion of the traditional and the new, and wholly recommended.
