STARPOINT:
Keep On It

Dutch Vinyl Masterpiece, 2005
I Just Want To Be Your Lover – For You – Interlude – Keep On It – I Want You Closer – Baby Let Me Do It – We’re Into Love – Starpoint’s Here Tonight

The last of the Starpoint releases that I will cover is the excellent "Keep On It". Resplendent in their glittery gear they look very Norman Whitfield and musically they are also on the button. All that I can say is that if you are a fan of this group, you will like this album too. The mix of midtempo steppers and ballads is pitched just right, and Lionel Job’s production is perfectly patched to the vocal talents of Renee Diggs and the gents. "I Just Want To Be Your Lover" is a good tune for radio and I am sure the likes of Starpoint have pumped this out at some point, and rightly so.

This is followed by a more laid back effort which isn’t their best effort, but rather pallatable due to some tasty instrumentation. There is a lovely interlude which is soulful, yet reminiscent of Lenny White’s more funky outings, and it acts as the perfect entrée for the uptempo title cut, "Keep On It". This isn’t a bad track but I am more impressed with the excellent "I Want You Closer" which is so 1981 that it hurts! It has everything that makes a record of this era great – and also makes the purchase of this album ESSENTIAL!

The searching ballad "Baby Let Me Do It" does sound as if it is from vinyl, and that is a minor fault on here considering how rare these albums are, and the reluctance of the companies themselves to release the material. While listening to "We’re Into Love" I am drawn to compare it to Earth, Wind & Fire – particularly where the harmonies are concerned. Very nice effort, and better than the uptempo groover "Starpoint’s Here Tonight" with its rock guitar. Still, another quality release and one that is limited so don’t hang around with these releases!
