Top 10 Jazz Favourites
I'm from Chicago, U.S., and my favorite artist
is a local jazz guitarist who has released three
CDs in the U.S. and internationally...he will be
a big star on the next CD's release - I know
it!!! So, starting with him (his website is
http://www.nickcolionne.com if you're
interested):
My favorite artists/jazz songs:
1. Nick Colionne, "The Seduction",
Chicago Lakeside Jazz. Funky jazz guitar and a
great live entertainer. The next jazz guitar
superstar.
2. King Pleasure, who in my opinion took jazz
vocals to a height only dreamed of by Louis
Armstrong. "Moody's Mood for Love" has
been released on many of his compilation albums
and is marvelous. The same goes for
"Parker's Mood" inspired by the
phenomenal Charlie Parker's sax playing.
3. 'Round Midnight. Great renditions to check out
are by Charlie Parker ("Yardbird Suite"
which also has "Parker's Mood" which
inspired #2 above) and Wes Montgomery "'Jazz
'Round Midnight"
4. Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass - "Take Love
Easy". Just voice and guitar, no
orchestration - wonderful!!!
5. Billie Holliday - "Strange Fruit:
1937-1939". The most powerful jazz vocal
song of all time with other magnificant jazz
standards such as "You Go To My Head"
(also featured on #4 and #1 recommendations)
6. Dave Brubeck "Take Five". With all
the weak remakes of this classic lately, it's
worth listening to the original again to see what
it's really all about
7. Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn "Piano
Duets - Great Times". Better keyboards
you'll never hear.
8. Miles Davis "Sketches of Spain".
Groundbreaking, often overlooked.
9. Art Porter "Pocket City". The early
death of this talented sax player has put him
into the background. Take another listen at his
big label debut album and think about where he
might have been had he lived.
10. Gene Krupa "Drummer Man". Swing is
really hot again - this 1956 Krupa recording
shows why.
Regards,
Carol Ray

for an Erykah Badu, Jill Scott and all the others
who deserve to be mentioned.
2000 was a very good year for Soul music. A Top
50 could be easily done. Looks like a bit
different to some other top 20 Soul Charts of
