Portrait is yet another new male group which has enjoyed pop chart success lately. There are three lead singers in the quartet but none of them is particularly great. However, the tunes on their untitled debut album are often persuasive and the overall feeling is nice and cool.

The album is a mixture of slick and shuffling swingbeaters and sweet and gentle soul ballads. The track that has caused most interest is On and On, a stylish slowie which has a classy intro with Gerald Albright on soprano saxophone, although the intro really promises more than the vocalist delivers. Vocally a bit more challenging is Day by Day, which is also my favourite tune on the album.

Musically they remind me of Surface, so if you like that kind of sophisticated and light side of soul, you might like Portrait as well.
