WENDY MOTEN

Here's yet another female soul debut worth a mention: the untitled eleven track CD by a songstress named Wendy Moten. Vocally somewhere between Miki Howard and Whitney Houston, Wendy would undoubtedly be able to deliver some real classy soul ballads, but unfortunately the record company has heard her potential as a new Whitney Houston type of pop icon. This of course means the album is full of uptempo tracks often with inconvenient (to these ears, at least) pop overtones. And furthermore, some ballads lean towards MOR territory, especially the Michael Masser-ish So Close to Love while there's no denying Wendy sings it more than well.

Luckily, all is not lost. The duet with Michael Webb, Whatever It Takes is as passionate and powerful as the Keith Washington duet on Chanté Moore's debut CD, and Wonderin' is an absolutely superb, tasty midtempo mover with Najee blowing the sax.

Let's wish that Wendy will get more tracks like this on her next album!
Soul Express Rating: 6/10
