Soul Express CD Review - from Soul Express 1/93

Christophes Williams: Changes (1992)

Christopher Williams: Changes

Rating: 7/ 10

US MCA 1992
1) All I See 2) Don't U Wanna Make Love 3) Good Luvin' with Mary J. Blige 4) Come Go With Me See All 5) When a Fool Becomes a Man 6) Changes 7) Where Is the Love 8) Let's Get Right 9) Where Are U Now 10) Every Little Thing U Do See All 11) Please, Please, Please 12) Dreamin'

The first time I heard Christopher Williams' second album Changes (US MCA 10751), I was totally struck with the dynamite vocal performances throughout the album. The let down I'm afraid comes in the quality of the songs. Written by the same team that was responsible for the Mary J. Blige debut, the melodies are all but melodic, and the total lack of immediacy demands much from the listener, possibly more than many soul buyers will give. Nevertheless, Christopher's masculine vocals are so extremely tough - at times like a lion's roar - it almost makes one forget the melody line.

Once again, one feels that the best tune on the album is a cover version. Teddy P's Come Go with Me is not a bad choice, and Christopher gives a convincing enough vocal reading. I was delighted to see that one of the stronger songs, When a Fool Becomes a Man was co-written by Christopher himself.

As I said, I'm not a great fan of the song-writing style of these young hip hop-soul producers, but it's good to see they are not afraid to put together ballad-oriented albums.
